Yugen, an important concept in traditional Japanese aesthetics, is an expression of depth, of the untranslatable, of the incomprehensible and of the abstract that passes from philosophy to art. Through the contrast of shadow with the intervals of light produced by the windows and the illuminated surface of the kitchen, through the hidden landscape that eventually reveals itself, Casa Yugen makes a non-verbal invitation to the space in which one can glimpse the beauty of the mystery of the universe and of our human condition. At the entrance, the curved wall of the entrance hall, in its shape and tone, creates an infinite “plane” on the concave face, which hides the landscape before revealing it.
In plan or seen from the inside, it creates a central axis that deploys the social space without angles, in an organic way. The water mirror in front of the long windows reflects the macro bonsais which seem to float and the day sky. Texture and natural light vary greatly, creating a new landscape with textures of sun and water as the days pass. Spaces interact in all corners of the “L” plane. The unusual way in which the Ramona armchair by André Gippi has been positioned communicates with the living room, while the living room opens onto the antechamber and the kitchen/dining room. The dark walls that embrace the environment frame the lit windows, the painting by Rubens Oestroem, the kitchen, the furniture, the decoration, the floor and the ceiling, “heaven and earth”. Chiaroscuro is a resource that plays with the concept of “Yugen”, in which elements are highlighted, hidden and imitated on the surfaces, in a way that plays with the protagonism of the pieces; in the living room, the sofa and the coffee table merge with the carpet that blends into the floor. The dark library, in its composition, imitates the horizon of the opposite wall, with overturned books, “the hidden knowledge”, and the water that is also present in the bar and in the work ‘Ponta do Coral I’ d ‘Alessandro Gruetzmacher.
The “faux rubber tree” plant, proportionally large for an interior space, functions as a physical and visual landmark between the living room and the kitchen. The choice of large-format vegetation also plays with scales. In a concept always adopted by the architect in which the natural and built environment, the plants with the view of the window, the natural light and that of the luminaries must mutually enrich each other. The kitchen, in a puristic off-white and white background, with translucent shelf lighting, evokes the light from the windows that it does not have. This is punctuated by the Quartz du Nil island, organic and dark like a monolith that has appropriated the house and assumed a function. There is the deca tank and the dryer which seem to have been sculpted in the volume.
