1. For smelly fridges: water + vinegar + vanilla extract

Spilled food, condensation and humidity in the refrigerator can cause bacteria to multiply, resulting in foul odors. Odors can linger even after removing old food and drinks from the fridge. Besides making you sick and nauseous, these smells can also make fresh food expire faster! 🤢

How to clean:

  1. Unplug the refrigerator and remove everything inside.
  2. Leave the refrigerator door open and air it out for 15 to 30 minutes.
  3. Mix the following in a spray bottle:
    • 1 cup lukewarm water
    • 1/2 cup white vinegar
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  4. After airing the refrigerator, spray the mixture all over and wipe it with a cloth.

2. For thick grease in the kitchen: vinegar + water + lemon juice + washing up liquid

From opening cupboards with greasy hands to accidentally spilling sauces on countertops, the messy moments that come with cooking are often unavoidable. 😖 Over time, it’s likely that our kitchen cabinets, counters, and stovetops will get coated in sticky grease. More often than not, they are quite difficult to eliminate!

How to clean:

  1. Mix the following ingredients in a spray bottle:
    • 1 cup cleaning vinegar or white vinegar
    • 1/2 cup of water
    • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
    • 1 teaspoon of washing up liquid
  2. Spray oily surfaces with the mixture and let stand for 5 minutes.
  3. Wipe it with a cloth.

3. For mold growth in the bathroom: vinegar + clove oil + tea tree oil

A damp, warm bathroom is an ideal environment for mold spores to grow and spread. Even when we don’t take a shower, the lack of ventilation, leaky pipes, and damp sink can still produce lingering dampness that promotes mold growth. If left untreated, mold in the bathroom can even cause respiratory infections and allergies! 😱

How to clean:

  1. Create a DIY spray mix consisting of:
    • 1 cup white vinegar
    • 20 drops clove oil
    • 20 drops of tea tree oil
  2. Spray the mixture on the affected area and brush the mold.
  3. Leave for 20 minutes and rinse with warm water.

4. For lime or water stains on mirrors and glass: vinegar + washing up liquid + lemon juice

Having a mold-free bathroom is not enough, as its cleanliness can still be affected by water spots on glass and mirrors, as well as limescale buildup on faucets and showerheads. Although limescale is not harmful to our health, it can restrict water flow if not cleaned. In the extreme, it can even lead to cracked pipes and blocked boilers! 😩 It’s not very aesthetic either. 🙈

How to clean:

  1. In a spray bottle, mix:
    • 1 cup white vinegar
    • 1 tablespoon of dish soap
    • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  2. Spray the mixture on the affected areas and let it sit for 30 minutes.
  3. Wipe or rinse off the mixture.

Always be sure to do a patch test before you start spraying heavily. Also avoid spraying the mixture on porous stones!

5. For smelly carpets: baking soda + essential oil

Carpet fibers and backing materials tend to capture and store contaminants such as dust, dirt, and trash, resulting in foul odors over time. 🤧 Additionally, excess moisture from spills, sweat, and high humidity can promote mold growth on the carpet, which can also cause foul odors quickly.

How to clean:

  1. Mix 10 drops of essential oil with 1/2 cup of baking soda.
  2. Sprinkle the mixture evenly on the carpet and leave it on for an hour.
  3. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly to remove the mixture.

6. For stinky washing machines: baking soda + water + vinegar

Soap scum, standing water, and mold in the gasket are common culprits of a smelly washing machine. Worse still, foul odors can be transferred to your clothes! 😤 If the door of the washing machine is constantly closed, the damp and warm interior will even be an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and mold.

How to clean:

  1. Mix 1/4 cup of baking soda with 1/4 cup of water and pour the mixture into the detergent compartment.
  2. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the drum.
  3. Run the machine through a full cycle at high heat.
  4. Thoroughly wipe the inside of the machine with a dry cloth.
