Utica Men’s Hockey #2 Seed in NCAA Tournament with 1st Round Bye

UCHC’s Division III men’s hockey champions, the Utica Pioneers, will try to regain what the pandemic took away in the spring of 2020. Utica won the UCHC title then and just when they were on about to take on the challenge of winning a national championship, COVID-19 forced the cancellation of everything. Now Utica is the conference champion again and they enter the NCAA Tournament with a 1st round bye.

Utica defeated Wilkes University on Saturday night at the Adirondack Bank Center by a commanding 7-4 margin, winning the 2021-22 UCHC Championship, with a season-best 25-2-1. The win gave Utica the automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. Utica will face the winner of this weekend’s game between the University of New England (UNE) and Plymouth State at home next Saturday, March 19, at 2 p.m. at the Adirondack Bank Center. Utica hasn’t played UNE or Plymouth State this season.

The semi-finals and championship round will take place March 25-26 at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid.

Utica has only suffered 2 losses this season, including one at the hands of the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Adrian. The two teams met in early October, and while Utica won Game 1, 3-2 in overtime, Adrian won Game 2 a day later, 4-3. Utica’s only other loss of the season came to tournament No. 3 seed SUNY Geneseo. Geneseo defeated Utica 3-0 on November 27.

Tickets for the March 19 quarterfinal game at the Adirondack Bank Center will go on sale to season ticket holders on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and then to the general public on Sunday.

They sold just about anything, you could get a pretty good meal at most of them, and of course the highlight was always the rows of penny candies. Upstate still has a lot of these stores around (some of them are 100, 150, 170 years old!). Here’s a list to start your journey to the general stores of your youth. They are all awesome!
