More often than not, some of our favorite purchases are small, how-I-don’t-know-about-those products that solve a daily problem. This is what we emphasize in our Little lifeguards series: simple and inexpensive purchases that you will use every day. Click on “Add to cart” and thank us later!

Problem: Living in New York means my pup picks up dirt from the sidewalk and brings it home – right on my shag white carpet. She also ends up licking her paws often, and who knows what kind of germs are lurking on her toes after a walk.

Solution: Sleepy Cotton Afterwalk Sanitizing Paw Cleanser, the canine equivalent of Purell.

If you’ve ever walked your puppy down a city street, you know he gets into it all: spilled drinks, dirt, mysterious puddles and whatever is lurking on the sidewalks. Rainy days are even worse. While I dry my dog every time we come back from a walk, a dry towel is not enough. I also used baby wipes, but they tend to dry out its paws and smell really weird. Olive, my bitch, also has a thing for her feet (she hated something cold and wet on her paws, so baby wipes fall into that category), and she squirms as I try to clean her.

Also, as silly as it is, I bought a light colored (well, it’s white) rug for the living room in my apartment, which I like to keep clean and spotless. No shoes in the house help, but when you have a 10 month old puppy running around with dirty paws, all bets are off.

During my usual Instagram scroll, I saw an ad for Sleepy Cotton’s Afterwalk Gel and decided to give it a try. After all, I was going to keep cleaning Olive’s paws somehow, so why not try something that was made for dogs?

Although I like a good product, I actively resist buying too many dog products for fear of becoming this dog owner. This means no clothes (except a necessary rain jacket), no puppy scent (yes it’s one thing), and no impractical products. Do i really need a disinfectant just for my dog? After reading more on dog skin and how different it is from human skin, I realized I had done it.

Sleepy Cotton’s disinfectant gel not only promises to kill harmful germs and bacteria on your dog’s paws, but it also promises to rid their paws of accumulated dirt and debris, which can cause infections or allergies. Keeping your dog’s paws clean can also help reduce licking, which in turn keeps all of these bacteria and debris out of their mouths. Of course, if you notice constant licking, itching, or visible irritation of the paws, contact your vet for help.

What really convinced me about the disinfectant is that it is safe for dogs to lick. There are no alcohol or harsh cleansers in the gel – just clean vegan ingredients like aloe, a cleanser made from coconut, chamomile, and other natural ingredients.

A bottle of cleanser weighs 8.8 ounces and costs around $ 18, which is more than enough to keep me going for a few months. To use the cleanser, all you need to do is squeeze a pea-sized amount onto your puppy’s paws and massage them gently. If there is excess cleaner, wipe it off with a cloth or microfiber cloth (which they include with the cleaner when you buy it). Otherwise, you don’t need to wipe off the cleaner unless it bothers your dog.

The formula not only breaks down the dirt and grime on your dog’s paws, but it also hydrates his pads, which tend to get rough and dry. If they get too dry, they can crack and bleed, like when we have dry skin on our knuckles, which is another place bacteria can enter and cause infection. In addition, its light scent of citrus and herbs is quite pleasant.

Like I said, Olive doesn’t really like having her paws touched, but she definitely liked this gel better than the baby wipes. She didn’t immediately pull away when I started pulling her paws, and because I was massaging the gel into her paws with my fingers, I could really feel it working. Small, gritty bits of dirt came off my fingers, and when I wiped off the excess paws with a rag, a little grass and dirt stain came off as well.

Overall I’m really happy with how well Sleepy Cotton Afterwalk Sanitizing Paw Cleansing Gel worked, even after just one use. I even gave them all natural shampoo and facial cleanser (Olive gets a lot of potato chips in her eyes) give it a try, and I’m just as impressed. I will definitely continue to use the paw cleaner, especially after long walks around our neighborhood and visits to the dog park. Not only does this give Olive super soft and clean paws, but it also gives me a gift of a clean white carpet – and for that I’m eternally grateful.
