  • RugsUSA is a great site for affordable rugs.
  • The site is huge, but we have tips to make it easier to navigate.
  • Below are examples of the stylization of some of his rugs.

I love rugs. I like them enough that my partner is probably considering getting the phrase “More mats!” tattooed on their face. I still continue to buy them.

When we moved into a new apartment, I had the perfect opportunity to acquire more rugs (oops, but not really) – and change them from room to room a hundred times before I got it right.

Most of the antique rugs in our apartment come from small shops in Brooklyn, but all of the base layers come from RugsUSA, a supplier of thousands of rug styles, sizes, and shapes.

I turn to RugsUSA for the more affordable (sometimes downright cheap) base coats that help ground a room. Of course, you can also find bold and eclectic styles here.

I purchased two rugs for our new apartment from RugsUSA; the Chunky Loop Maui rug in off-white for our bedroom and the Monochrome Texture Dunescape rug for our office. Both are textured, neutral rugs that make great base layers in any room. Neither had a price above $350; the cheaper of the two was under $200 – good enough for a size around 8ft by 10ft. Not to mention that the quality is exceptional.

How to use Rugs USA

The overall shopping experience of sorting through styles at RugsUSA is much less overwhelming thanks to all of its smart filters. Select everything from shapes and sizes to colors, materials and patterns. You can even filter by top selling mats, those with videos and many other features. Since there are tens of thousands of options on the site, you better apply as many filters as possible.

I found that searching for terms such as “textured white carpet” and “woven white carpet” gave relevant results, then I used additional filters from there to narrow down my choice. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, but the clearer you have of your space, the easier it will be to find the right rug for you. The surprisingly high number of customer reviews also helps.

Even if you don’t know exactly what you like, the site offers beautifully staged lifestyle photos that let you see the rugs in a real home environment so you can imagine a little better what it will look like in your space.

On the other side of our room is another antique Afghan rug that we bought a few years ago at a flea market. The Maui Loop carpet underneath collects a little dust, but I don’t mind vacuuming the underside by hand once a month or so.

How the rugs held up

If you have a pet that likes to chew on things or a robot vacuum, a rug with big fringes probably isn’t your best bet. I should have taken that into account when ordering since I have both of these things, but I loved the look of the Chunky Loop Maui rug so much I risked it. And while it looks great in our bedroom, it also traps a lot of dust underneath because the weave is loose enough for small particles to fall through. Also note that the fringe has frayed a bit due to the vacuum.

If you’re willing to spend a little extra time cleaning under the rug once in a while, I think the Chunky Loop Maui rug is worth it simply for its beauty. It’s available in a variety of colors and sizes, and it’s the perfect base layer for closed rooms like bedrooms or large open spaces like dining rooms that could use a large area rug to anchor the space.

Our cat loves to snuggle up by the office window on this white rug. Her hair definitely sticks to it, so I probably wouldn’t recommend this rug to pet owners unless you know how to vacuum frequently.

As for the carpet we put in our office, it has held up beautifully over time. It gets a ton of traffic and it still looks brand new. There is only one size left of this particular rug, but I would recommend looking for other rugs made by RugsUSA (versus the third-party brands they carry) that are made with wool. I feel like it’s the durability of the materials that has kept it looking so good all this time.

The bottom line

RugsUSA is a solid place to buy beautiful rugs that don’t look cheap. The rugs are excellent quality for the price, sales are plentiful (so there’s never a reason to pay full price) and the options are endless.

However, it’s understandable that you might be skeptical of the quality when the site offers so many styles. As long as you have a general idea of the type of rug you want, you’ll have an easier time sifting through the options.
