Robot vacuums have come a long way since their expensive beginnings. Now you can get a self-draining robot vacuum for not much more than a mid-range model; with the release of $699 Roborock Q5 Plus.

It’s almost half the price of the company’s flagship S7 MaxV Ultra. You might be thinking, “so what am I losing?” You’re right in thinking that, because the cost savings have to come from somewhere. Roborock hit that price by making the Q5 Plus vacuum only, so you don’t get any mopping capability.

It’s a fair compromise. All of the other robot vacuums I personally tested had mopping capabilities, and I never used that feature again after testing. Not everyone needs this feature, so it’s nice to save some money if you can live without it.

You still get Roborock’s auto-mapping LiDAR and collision detection, so your furniture and baseboards are protected from impact. You also get 2700Pa of suction, enough for all but the thickest and tallest carpets.

I’ve been using the Roborock Q5 Plus for a few weeks now; so let’s see why i think this is the best robovac for most people.

So what is the Roborock Q5 Plus?

Using the Roborock Q5 Plus couldn’t be easier. There are only two buttons on the device, Power and Dock. One tap is enough to clean the entire floor, another tap interrupts the cleaning process or a long press turns it on and off. The Dock button returns the Q5 Plus to its docking station for charging and dumping.

You also get voice alerts from Q5 Plus. These announce when it’s about to clean, when it’s about to return to the dock, if it’s charging or fully powered, and a few other things. It helps not to get in the way when he’s on the floor, but you can turn them down or even turn them off if you want.

You can also manage cleaning from the app, which we’ll discuss in more detail below.

The Q5 Plus’ suction is excellent. It was more than a game for dust, crumbs and whatever ended up on the floor. When it’s finished cleaning or detects the internal trash can is full, it returns to the dock.

Once there, the Q5 Plus is vacuumed by the dock to help keep the area clean. This goes through a vent at the base of the dock. The dock collects all the dust in a disposable dust bag, so you don’t even have a messy cleanup here.

Even at the highest suction setting, the Q5 Plus was still quieter than my handheld stick vacuum. You can also set the cleaning to several levels, from silent to max. The self-emptying dock is louder than the robovac, but luckily it only takes a few seconds to empty the bin.

How is the software with the Roborock Q5 Plus?

One of the most outstanding features of any Roborock robot is the quality of its software. It’s mostly intuitive and lets you control multiple devices if you have them. You can also remotely control your device, if you think it has missed a spot.

With the Q5 Plus, you just need to add the robot vacuum to your account and Wi-Fi. I had some issues with previous Roborock models taking a long time to connect to Wi-Fi, so I’m happy to report that the Q5 Plus only took seconds.

Because this model has LiDAR, it will map your floors on the first clean. This gives you a 2D or 3D model of your home for future use. You can use it to schedule individual room cleanings, so high-traffic areas like hallways can be cleaned more often.

You can also save multiple maps if you live in a multi-level house. This is useful if you want to move the Q5 Plus between floors to clean the whole house, without it needing to re-scan the floor each time.

The app also lets you create virtual no-go zones, useful on this model if you have a high-pile carpet. A long mat will wrap around the brush, stopping the Q5 in its tracks.

You can also drop a pin on the map and have the vacuum cleaner make a radius of five meters around it. Great for extra cleaning around the table after meals, especially if you have a toddler like me.

The Q5 Plus can also be integrated with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri Shortcuts. Nothing says luxury like telling your smart home to get the floors cleaned.

So should you buy one?

Nobody likes doing chores and having to empty your robot vacuum’s trash can after a clean is annoying. The Roborock Q5 Plus gives you up to seven weeks of dust-free floors before you need to put a new bag in the dock.

For $699, we think it’s the best robovac for most people. If you have very thick carpets or rugs, or need mopping ability, look at the most expensive. S7 MaxV Plusor the Dreamtech W10.

You can also opt for one of iRobot’s Roomba models, but you will have to buy a Braava Robot Mop and it will take twice as much floor space for the docks.

As a bonus, Roborock takes $100 off the MSRP for a limited time, on Amazon and their own showcase. Don’t forget to select the coupon on Amazon before checking out.
