My new house: New construction in Collierville

Domnic and Kara Fernandez say they were looking for a new adventure together, as well as a change of job. The couple moved from Tustin, Calif., After Domnic accepted a vice president position at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. Subsequently, Kara found a position as a specialist in mathematical inventions at Forest Hill Elementary School in Germantown.

Domnic and Kara got in touch with Melanie Blakeney, a broker affiliated with Marx-Bensdorf Realtors, through a company offering their services as part of Domnic’s relocation package. “When we contacted Melanie in January, it was first by phone,” Kara explained. “She asked us about our likes / dislikes in a house and region and started sending us MLS announcements via email. By working with her, we have refined our research over time. When we got here at the end of April she was our guide. Melanie showed us many homes and also shared information about local events to help us get involved in the community. In addition, she helped us in conversations with the builder and ultimately with our closure.

Kara continued, “We knew we wanted a house with lots of natural sunlight. Also, having a gas stove and kitchen island with storage, actually plenty of storage space in the kitchen overall, was also at the top of our wish list. Also, we were hoping to find a house with high ceilings and a floor plan that included at least two bedrooms downstairs. As for the setting, we wanted a house that wouldn’t back down from another house and we wanted a neighborhood with sidewalks.

The couple worked with Melanie to find a home that would tick everything on their list. In all, they viewed about 30 properties. In the end, they paid $ 570,000 for a traditional style home at The Cove at Cypress Grove in Collierville. The house had approximately 3,200 square feet of heated living space – this was before the couple added a fourth bedroom and an additional bathroom (after their new home closed), bringing their living space closer to 3,400 square feet.

“We felt the addition went smoothly, as our house was a new build in the first place,” said Domnic. “Now we have four bedrooms and four bathrooms. The original floor plan featured three bedrooms and three bathrooms, all on the main level. We added the additional bedroom and bathroom on the second floor, from a converted attic. “

The dining room is an extension of the kitchen.

As well as providing a feeling of space, the house had a wall of windows to the rear that let in plenty of sunlight.

“These windows flood the living room / family room and kitchen area with natural light,” Kara explained. “There is ample space for entertaining and the rooms feel large due to the high ceilings. Another thing we love is the floor-to-ceiling brickwork surrounding the fireplace. The kitchen is part of an open floor plan that opens to the breakfast room and family room, with the dining area located close by.

The formal dining room has been converted into a sitting area.

Overall, this house differs from the couple’s old house in size, both inside and out.

“We now have three bedrooms downstairs, instead of three beds upstairs,” Domnic said. “In addition, we gained a large garage and lots of storage space in the attic, which is ideal for storing items out of season. Finally, we now have a larger yard.

The living room is a spacious and comfortable space to relax at the end of the day.

When asked if there was anything they wanted to change in their new home, Kara replied, “We have already replaced the carpet that was in the bedrooms on the first floor. And we added the fourth bedroom upstairs, with a walk-in closet and a full bathroom.

When it comes to their neighborhood, Dominic and Kara said they still have more of it than they hoped for in terms of location. Their house backs onto Collierville Road and their view includes horses belonging to one of their neighbors. The area is lined with winding sidewalks and there are ponds and water bodies at the entrances to their community.

“Our development is often referred to as a ‘shopping district’,” said Kara. “It has charming cottage and farmhouse style plans. It’s a very nice community. Neighbors interact often and we have easy access to shopping malls and activities in the area. In addition, as an educator for over 15 years, I really appreciate having access to a quality public school system.
