Mediterranean family grocery store Deli and Farm Shop in Wistow celebrates 10 years in business

A Leicestershire family food business celebrates its 10th anniversary.

The Mediterranean Deli and Farm Shop at the Wistow Rural Center is a popular spot – and if you’ve ever tried one of their feta and spinach slices, you’ll know why.

Customers can purchase authentic homemade baklava, a treat made from filo pastry and honey-dipped almonds, as well as Turkish delights, and a delicious range of pastries which, in addition to spinach slice and feta, includes a sun-dried tomato and feta. version, and a vine tomato, halloumi and garlic option.

There are freshly marinated olives in Welland Valley canola oil, fresh garlic and chili flakes, locally made focaccia, and traditional granary, white and wholemeal breads.

You’ll find a great selection of jams, chutneys and curds, wines, beers and spirits – including Two Birds gin and vodka, made at Market Harborough.

In addition to food and drink, the shop offers a unique offering of Turkish rugs and mosaic lamps, all imported from Turkey.

The Wistow boutique was launched in 2012 by Trudie Ustabas and her husband, Sefer. However, the idea for the business was born in 2009, when Trudie suggested Sefer pickle some of their favorite Turkish Gemlik olives and sell them to friends and family.

They registered their business – The Olive Tree Company Ltd – and began selling in pubs and restaurants, and later on a stall in Market Harborough.

Trudie told LeicestershireLive: “Our focus at the start was to add more items to our menu, so we could offer savory and sweet Turkish and Mediterranean dishes. So Sefer added some of the street food and incorporated the his late mother’s baklava recipe.

“We started frequenting local farmers’ markets, using local ingredients where possible in our recipes.”

In 2011 the couple started looking for premises in southern Leicestershire, and the fruit and vegetable shop in Wistow – which Sefer supplied with olives – was available to rent.

They decided it would be a great place, and in 2012 their delicatessen and farmhouse opened.

Trudi initially continued her work as a jewelery buyer and manager at George Tarratt in Leicester, but the following year decided to take the plunge and help Sefer at the boutique.

According to Trudie, they pride themselves on making and stocking products with no added preservatives or additives and educating customers about food intolerances and eating foods low in salt and sugar, using honey to sweeten foods. rather than sugar.

She said the store has the largest stock of raw honey in Leicestershire, which it sources from small artisan producers in Italy. Additionally, in season, customers can also purchase local honey, which is said to be good for fighting hay fever.

Over the years, the shop has grown to include Turkish homewares and rugs, and the food selection has also grown.

Looking back, Trudie said: “When you have your own business, you have to live and breathe your business, always striving to be unique, forward-thinking and not a follower but a leader.

“Ten years now, wow it’s been tough, but we have repeat customers and new customers every day and we also get compliments from our suppliers.

“We have always been a champion for local growers and artisan producers around the world, now suppliers are reaching out to me to be part of our journey.”

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, deli owners are offering customers 10% off everything in the store throughout March.

The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday and from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
