The Heriz rug, which originated in a mountainous region in northwestern Iran, is valued for its durability. The rugs are handmade from a strong wool, shaved from sheep grazing in fields which benefit from traces of copper in the water.
The stories behind vintage and antique rugs like the Heriz, and the beauty behind sustainable textiles – as a functional work of art, as a symbol, as a heritage – are what kept the owner away from Candice Schrock company in her life as a clothing designer, and in the world of woven fabrics.
Petrichor Vintage Co. – “petrichor” means “the smell of rain on dry land” – caught her full attention in December 2019, when Schrock turned her side-line e-commerce business into a full-time job. She offers in-person appointments to view the rugs at her home studio in Hamilton, far from Petrichor’s roots in Portland, Oregon, where Schrock started the business as an Etsy store in 2017 while working as a designer for Columbia. Sportswear.
“I only sell vintage and antique rugs so they’ve all been ‘pre-loved’ as I like to say,” Schrock said. “A lot of the ones I buy are made by nomads or people who live in small villages, most of them mainly in Iran. She also sources rugs in Turkey and looks for those made with sustainable materials and processes, such as dyeing in small batches with dyes derived from vegetables, fruits and nuts.
His sustainable business philosophy was inspired in part by his last job as Design Director for Canada Goose in Toronto. Schrock left that role to devote his time to his growing business, which has seen sales continue throughout the pandemic. She attributes it to people “who seek to beautify the space around them”.
Depending on the size and style, the rugs on his site range from a few hundred dollars to over $ 5,500. She donates five percent of her sales to community organizations that support women.
Now, Schrock plans to rename his business (by the way, not many people know what “petrichor” means) and is looking to source locally for other items for his shop, including handmade paper for cards. thanks.
Although Schrock has said she has become a small business owner, she hopes consumer habits towards sustainable textiles will give her business longevity, as will rugs.
“They are literally made to last forever.”
