The Transformational Center of Life [TLC] for Families opened its doors last week to 5 families in need of housing and other support services.
“After being given the green light for occupancy, all the preparation and teamwork came together, with an emotional day of moms and their children entering their new homes for the next 12 months of their lives,” said a spokesperson.
“It was a very emotional day for everyone, both guests and staff. There are currently only 5 resident host families, until it is safer to expand. It is also a time of discovery, relief, healing, and exploring new hopes and dreams, as well as discovery for the director and staff of TLC.
“TLC has always been a community project. And one such member of the Pembroke community, Mrs. Sharon Jacobs, embraced this attitude wholeheartedly.
“Ms. Jacobs approached TLC during the renovations and requested permission to provide full coverings for every window and door in the facility.
“To put that into perspective, TLC has about 40 windows, 10 bathrooms and doors throughout the facility. Some windows and doors only required blinds.
“Ms. Jacobs was invited to tour the facility and coordinated and purchased window coverings to match the colors of the carpets, walls and storage. When she discovered the rooms needed more privacy, she has added financial donations for other shades to ensure that mothers and children have the best privacy possible.More recently, Ms. Jacobs and her family have donated additional funds to improve the hardwood floors with rugs.
Ms Jacobs said: “I’ve always wanted to get involved in community service. The opportunity arose when I heard about TLC and contacted Elaine Butterfield, the TLC Project Manager, to advise that I was willing to supply all draperies, blinds and curtain rods , as well as equipping all the curtains and carpets for the bathrooms. I was really excited to help TLC as my passion is home decor, sewing and silk flower arrangements. I am also very happy with how everything went.
“I’ve asked my family to donate to provide rugs to help provide a sense of comfort and that’s definitely the case. I’m so thrilled to be able to help TLC and wish them all the best in providing a safe and secure place for moms and their children to have a second chance.
Ms Jacobs has also donated several hours of cleaning floors, bathrooms and fitting out bedrooms, as well as putting up curtains and providing special gifts of toiletries for mums, such as a bubble bath.
“The Transformational Center of Life [TLC] for Families would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms. Jacobs, her family and all of the other community partners who have come forward to make this day happen,” a spokesperson said.
