GOP candidate Lee Zeldin says NYers don’t feel safe

The New York State Republican Party has chosen U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin as the GOP endorsed candidate for governor. The field of Republican candidates is complete and it is likely, despite the endorsement, that Zeldin will face a main challenge.

Congressman Lee Zeldin joined WIBX First News with Keeler in the morning to discuss his candidacy.

Asked about his support, Zeldin said, “When I’m even in blue counties and when I’m with Democratic groups…across this state…everyone is excited. People are all affected by this personal decision… to leave this state.”

Zeldin says New Yorkers don’t feel safe. “Energy is everywhere in New York, in every region, in every walk of life.”

Zeldin will need votes from moderate Democrats and independents if he wants to win. The last Republican who was able to do so was Governor George Pataki in November 1994. Pataki defeated Governor Mario Cuomo and he remained in office until 2006.

Congressman Zeldin refused to denounce President Donald Trump’s claim that he was the rightful winner of the election against President Joe Biden. Since then, Zeldin has said, “President Biden is President of the United States…whether your candidates come first or second, we should always be working on ways to…work together.” He says he said this after certification from Congress which came late on the night of Jan. 6, 2021.

CNN correspondent ryan noble, who was also on the program, asked Rep. Zeldin where he sees the most extreme voices within the Republican Party. Zeldin disputed the question but said, “It’s not my style. You’re taking part in this opportunity…we’re not here in the Chamber to heckle.” He continued, “It is not appropriate for members of Congress … to participate in a way that makes it difficult for the president to convey what (the president) is trying to convey.”

Asked about his choice of a running mate in New York and about not picking a candidate upstate, Zeldin defended his decision and said Alison Esposito “is a absolutely outstanding choice…passionate, principled.Esposito is a former New York City Police Officer..
